Isabella Stewart-Gardner: A Gilded Age Boston Art Legacy – Webinar with New York Adventure Club

ABOUT THIS LECTURE

Date of the event

04/17/2023 - 2.30 pm (EDT)

If you have missed our talk on Isabella Stewart Gardner last year, this is your chance to join us live again for this event organized in collaboration with New York Adventure Club

While Boston is filled with its fair share of great American houses dating back to around the country’s founding, the former home of Isabella Stewart-Gardner is one of the city’s finest. Not only is it revered for its Venetian-style architecture, but also for the displayed artworks that come from Isabella’s personal collection. From Isabella’s hunger to travel the world to her collection of Italian Old Masters — considered one of the country’s greatest collections — it’s time to explore the life and legacy of one of the American Gilded Age’s leading art patrons.

Join New York Adventure Club as we delve into the unconventional story of Isabella Stewart Gardner, a wealthy bohémienne from 19th-century Boston whose many trips around the world eventually led her to establish one of the most treasured art collection in the United States.

Our virtual exploration of the life and art collection of Isabella Stewart-Gardner will include:

  • An overview of Isabella’s private life, from her family’s background and childhood growing up in New York to her first taste of traveling abroad
  • Isabella’s worldly adventures with her husband Jack, which included many trips to Europe as well as places rarely explored by American travelers like South-East Asia, China, and the Middle East
  • How Isabella became one of the most prominent 19th century American patrons of the arts
  • The story of how she not only collected artworks and artifacts from around the world and various time periods, but also positioned herself as a protector of artists, helping and supporting the career of prominent painters, writers, musicians and other cultural figures
  • The motivations behind the creation of Fenway Court, Isabella’s Venetian palazzo in Boston completed at the turn of the 20th century, and why she opened up her home as a public museum shortly thereafter
  • Highlights from the museum’s collection as well as artists, subjects, and styles present in the museum
  • Details surrounding the 1990 art heist that stole precious artworks from the museums — pieces that are still missing to this day
